How to prevent slips and falls
-
Ensure a slip rating was initially specified and adhered to for your space. (Most flooring suppliers do not guarantee the flooring will meet the advertised slip rating once installed).
-
Once new flooring has been installed, you must slip test your floor on site. Slip ratings can vary between lab and on site testing.
-
Ensure the company you use for your slip compliance and testing is NATA accredited.
-
Use cleaning products conducive to retaining grip and not reducing it throughout the cleaning process.
-
Perform regular cleaning and maintenance, this will keep your floors as non-slip as possible for as long as possible.
-
Continue to have regular slip resistance testing performed and rectify any non-compliance immediately.
In addition, you should also:
-
Mop up or sweep any debris from floors regularly.
-
Clean up any spills immediately and mark wet areas with appropriate signs.
-
Remove any obstacles from passage ways or anywhere there is a lot of foot traffic and try to keep clutter free.
-
Ensure there is somewhere to wipe wet feet upon entering a building especially when wet weather outside.
-
Ensure there is adequate lighting in the area.
-
Ensure surfaces are even with no variations in height from one surface to another.
-
Recoating or replacing floors that have a higher slip rating.
-
Install mats, or grip strips on surfaces.
-
Keep your flooring in good condition at all times.
